Overview of funding

WashU is committed to ensuring our students can experience a transformative and equitable experience regardless of their financial circumstances. The Student Success Fund offers access to additional funding for enrichment opportunities or emergency needs as they arise and serves as a valuable resource.

Student Success Fund eligibility

To be eligible for the Student Success Fund a student must:

Be a full-time undergraduate student
Have demonstrated need, identified by Student Financial Services
Be able to provide documentation of the expense
Provide a receipt of each purchase

Deadlines & important information

Wednesday, August 28, 2024: SSF informational update: 1 p.m., Zoom
Thursday, September 5, 2024: SSF informational update: 5 pm, Zoom
Friday, September, 13, 2024: SSF Application Portal Opens
Friday, November 22, 2024: Initial SSF application submission
Friday, December 6, 2024: Last day to send supporting documents and all receipts*

*Please note, you have two weeks from the time your application enters Under Review status to send all supporting documents requested by the SSF Team, before your application is denied. If this occurs, resubmit the application after all supporting documentation is readily available.

Fall 2024 walk-in hours

  • Tuesdays: 1-3 p.m.
  • Wednesdays and Fridays: 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
  • Appointments are also available upon request
  • Student Success Fund Manager office: DUC, room 330 in the TFCSS

Fund restrictions

We cannot pay for the following:

Tuition at Washington University or other institutions
Rent
Parking
Recurring bills like utilities or cell phone
Expenses that are not necessary for student success such as Airpods and iPads 

All requests should be a single payment request with the exception of mental health expenses.

Textbooks, course fees, materials, etc.

All textbooks/course fees/materials, etc. requests must go through Student Financial Services.  Student Success Funds cannot traditionally cover these items.

  1. Determine if the actual amount you have spent on textbooks/course fees, materials, etc., cost exceeds the budgeted amount in the semester’s cost of attendance(Your award letter will show what each semester’s budgeted amount is for books/supplies.
  2. If the answer is “Yes”, contact your SFS Counselor for additional financial assistance.
  3. If the answer is “No”, SFS is unable to provide additional financial assistance.

Student Union Opportunity FundSupport co-curricular expenses for students with financial need
Mental Health FundExpenses to support student mental health
Stephanie Brooks Dains and John DainsExpenses in support of student emergencies and educational enrichment
Varsity Athletic FundQualifying student-athletes can access the full student-athlete experience by removing financial barriers as allowed by the NCAA
Black Alumni Emergency FundExpenses for school supplies, books, application and graduate fees, emergency travel, and as a resource to support other such academic needs
